What Students Say
“I got into UVIC! This would not have been possible without Discovery. Prior to going to Discovery I did not have the confidence to even think about Camosun, let alone UVIC. Discovery changed all of that for me; it gave me the tools that I needed to succeed and think about my career and post-secondary goals. Discovery, thank you for all of your support! ” ~ Emily
“Seven years ago, I was a socially isolated child, who rarely talked to anyone, spending school recesses pacing around a solitary tree. Then I arrived at Discovery School in 2011, some years after having been diagnosed with autism. Discovery School has given me the opportunity to grow a great deal and feel confident enough to be involved in my community. I have participated both in school plays and in local theatre productions. As my confidence has grown, I have started to become involved in political activities, including my recent participation in the 2018 Forum for Young Canadians in Ottawa. I am currently registered to begin classes in September at the University of Victoria. ” ~ Grade 12 Student
“Design is a passion of mine and I’d like to learn to integrate design to improve the world. I like to study works of famous designers, and try to expand on them in my own way. I’m most interested in household objects and furniture. At Discovery school, I’m taking Carpentry, Art and Media Arts. I get to explore all sorts of different design techniques on computers and with pencil and paper. Next year, I’ll be attending the Fine Furniture program at Camosun College where I hope to develop my knowledge of design even more. ” ~ Sage
“I have Autism and ADHD, so throughout my life I have felt emotional pain and struggled with many things that are basic to most people including reading, socializing, transitioning to different activities, math, time management, and tolerance for when things do not go how I want them to. Many times I was in very negative moods, ruining activities for myself that would otherwise be beneficial to me. However now, instead of these challenges breaking me down, they only strengthened my ability to persevere, have hope for a better future, and made me even more determined to understand myself and how I can help other people not have to go through pain either similar or greater than mine. I am now on the verge of graduating and plan on attending college and university to study Political Science, History, and Philosophy in order to try and become a Federal Member of Parliament, so I can continue to help people on a national and international scale ” ~ Quin
“My friends and teachers have helped me. I feel I can talk to my friends when I am worried or upset. When there’s a problem I can tell the teachers. Also, when there’s a problem I can tell the teachers the problem without the students getting mad at me.” ~ Cameron
“When I came to this school, the teachers actually took the time to help me. Now I feel more confident in math. I love to go to school now. The teachers make learning more fun. My confidence has also helped me feel like ‘I can do it’. That’s why I feel like a hero at Discovery School.” ~ Heather
