School expectations and code of conduct

We expect students to obey all school rules.  They have been established for the help and protection of the children in our care.  It has been proven that young people who shine in today’s society have a willingness to listen to authority and to meet the challenge of high standards.  Therefore we depend on and expect our parents’ support when enforcement is necessary.

Each student is expected to:

  • Demonstrate courtesy to others (students and staff) at all times.
  • Listen and respond to not only their class teacher, but to ALL staff members.
  • Behave in a responsible manner.
  • Attend all classes, regularly and on time.
  • Diligently complete homework when it is assigned.
  • Prepare for each class; take appropriate materials and assignments to class.
  • Be well groomed and to dress appropriately.
  • Obey all school and classroom rules.Respect the rights and privileges of other students, of teachers, and other staff.
  • Respect the property of others, including school property and the facility.
  • Cooperate with or assist the school staff in maintaining safety, order and discipline.
  • Not bring gum / pop / candy / coffee / drugs / cigarettes / weapons / knives / alcohol to school.
  • Use appropriate language.Avoid fighting – including so-called “play fighting”.
  • Recognize that this is a Christian school and to be respectful towards all Christian precepts, activities and programs.
  • Avoid violations of the School Expectations / Code of Conduct.

The Principal has disciplinary authority over a student whenever the student’s action disrupts the educational process, regardless of time or location.  A student whose behaviour shows disrespect for others, including interference with their access to an education and a safe environment, will be subject to disciplinary action.

Discovery School is committed to creating and maintaining a school environment in which students, staff, parents, and community members feel safe. Schools respond to all threats of violence using the Violent Threat Risk Assessment as outlined by protocols. We are committed to keeping our students and communities safe for all. The parent handbook distributed at the start of each school year includes 'fair notice' information to our students and our communities that the school will address all threats to self and/or others.

The Ministry of Education launched the ERASE Bullying strategy in 2012-2013. It is a comprehensive strategy that includes a confidential reporting tool for students and/or parents, training on creating safe school cultures and violent threat risk assessment for every school in the province. Every school has a designated Safe School Coordinator as part of the ERASE strategy. At Discovery the designate is the principal.
